"Open to the public," says Hotel del Coronado's own page for its Lightshow Spectacular, and then it adds "no reservations needed." Almost nothing else on The Del's holiday calendar works that way. The hotel's 2026 press release says all holiday events are by reservation only and must be prepaid. The igloos, the Crown Room dinners and the rink all sell tickets. The show that anchors the whole season, though, is free. It runs nightly on the oldest holiday ground in Coronado, and anyone in town can reach it on foot.
Here is how that free core works this year, how the paid experiences are arranged around it, and how one week in early December puts it all together.
The Del's 2026 season is called "A Holiday Through Time" and runs from Friday, Nov. 20, 2026, through Sunday, Jan. 3, 2027. The Lightshow Spectacular runs the whole time. The hotel's event page describes a 10-minute show every 30 minutes from 5 to 9 p.m., every night.
That works out to roughly nine shows a night across about six weeks. You don't need a ticket, a time slot or a booking confirmation. If you come out after dinner on a weeknight, the longest you'll wait for the next show is about 20 minutes.
The show is set to a holiday soundtrack and ends with a flurry of snow. Next to the lawn is a bar built around a 12-foot replica of the hotel's red turret, with Victorian-inspired lounge seating that the hotel pitches as a place to watch from.
The site of the show says a lot about Coronado. The lights play over the grove of tall Norfolk Island Pines on Founders Lawn. One of those pines, the hotel says, became famous in 1904 as the world's first electrically lit outdoor Christmas tree.
The free show sits on the same piece of ground that put The Del on the holiday map more than 120 years ago. This year's theme leans into that history. The hotel is decorating with themed Christmas trees, each tied to a different era from its 1888 opening to today, and the famed two-story tree is back in the lobby.
If you have out-of-town family coming for Thanksgiving, the walk to Founders Lawn after the meal costs nothing. And it ends at the spot where the tradition of lighting an outdoor Christmas tree with electricity has its claim to a beginning.
The Lightshow is the free event you can catch any night. The Holiday Festival on Wednesday, Dec. 2 is the public night with the most going on. The hotel calls it its annual festival "with the local community" and says it is "open to all." Coronado school children perform holiday songs in the Founders Ballroom, and the evening schedule spreads out across the property:
| Time | What | Where |
|---|---|---|
| 4 to 10 p.m. | Skating by the Sea, ticketed | Windsor Lawn |
| 4:30 p.m. | Skydiving Santa lands | Del Beach |
| 5 to 9 p.m. | Lightshow Spectacular, every 30 minutes | Founders Lawn |
| 6:45 p.m. | Fireworks | Del Beach |
Photos with Santa work differently that night. The festival page says Santa Passes will be handed out on-site so families can get a time slot, and there are no online reservations for that date. The hotel also says festival times and details depend on the weather and may change.
Here is one way to plan the evening around the schedule:
That's three stops on one property, and the rink is the only item on that night's schedule with a posted ticket price.
Everything else is arranged around that free core. Here's what the paid side of the 2026 season looks like, based on the hotel's own listings:
Skating is the paid item most families will look at first, and its price changes with the calendar. The Skating by the Sea page lists general admission at $40 to $45 from Nov. 20 through Dec. 17, depending on date and time, and $45 from Dec. 18 through Jan. 3. Value sessions at $35 run before noon on Nov. 21 to 25, Nov. 29, Dec. 5 and 6, and Dec. 12 to 14, and all day on Dec. 1 and Dec. 8.
| Window | Price per skater |
|---|---|
| Value sessions on listed dates | $35 |
| Nov. 20 to Dec. 17 | $40 to $45 |
| Dec. 18 to Jan. 3 | $45 |
For residents, the gap between the cheapest and the most expensive session is $10 per skater. Over a family of four, that adds up quickly. A Tuesday on Dec. 1 or Dec. 8 gets the value price at any hour. The posted $5 discount applies to resort guests, members, military and first responders with ID, and not to value sessions. The hotel doesn't list a separate rate for Coronado residents. The hotel says a portion of skating proceeds will again go to Make-A-Wish San Diego.
Parking matters too. The skating FAQ says parking isn't included or validated, and standard rates apply. Day visitors who shop or dine at the resort get $10 off self-parking. For anyone within walking distance of Orange Avenue, that's one more reason to leave the car at home.
The hotel's press release calls the Holiday Lodge "new this year" and places it in The Del's historic 1919 Laundry building. The building gets glittering lights and festive décor, a family-friendly pub-style menu, holiday shopping, and kids' activities such as cookie and stocking decorating. The release addresses "guests and locals" directly.
The Lodge runs on select dates, not every night. According to its event page, those dates are:
Food and drinks are served from 2 to 10 p.m., and the shop is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The hotel notes that dates and times may change.
Look at where the dates fall. The Lodge opens Thanksgiving week, it's open on festival night, Dec. 2, and it runs daily from Dec. 17 to 30 and again Jan. 1 to 3. A Lightshow visit and a pub dinner in the Laundry building can be the same outing. The Laundry is also where The Del hosts its Rockin' New Year's Eve Party, with a live band and open bar, on Dec. 31.
All of this follows a recently completed restoration the hotel puts at more than $550 million. That work included the restored guestrooms in the historic Victorian building, the updated Beach Village, and a new neighborhood called Shore House.
The first week of December gives Coronado two community nights in three days. The Del's festival is Wednesday, Dec. 2. The Coronado Chamber of Commerce has the Coronado Annual Holiday Parade & Tree Lighting on Friday, Dec. 4, 2026. The Holiday Lodge is open both nights, and the Lightshow runs on Founders Lawn from 5 to 9 p.m. both evenings.
Santa photos at The Del also begin that Friday. The hotel lists them for Dec. 4 to 6, Dec. 11 to 13, and Dec. 18 to 24, with reservations through its experiences page. Gingerbread house decorating, with houses the culinary team assembles in advance, starts that weekend on Dec. 5.
So for a resident, December 2 through December 4 is the busiest stretch of the season. It's two community evenings, a new indoor space open both nights, and a 10-minute show on the Founders Lawn pines every half hour from 5 to 9 p.m.
